What is Expansive Clay Soil?

Expansive clay soil, also known as shrink-swell soil, is a type of soil that significantly expands when it absorbs moisture and contracts when it dries out. This natural swelling and shrinking can cause significant damage to structures built on top of it.

The key characteristic of expansive clay soil is its ability to retain water, which makes it highly reactive to changes in moisture content. When it rains or the soil absorbs water from irrigation, the clay particles swell, pushing upwards and exerting pressure on foundations, driveways, and pool structures. Conversely, during dry periods, the clay contracts, causing the ground to settle and often leaving cracks or voids behind. This continuous movement results in stress on structures, leading to cracks, uneven surfaces, and long-term damage.

Regions with high levels of clay content in the soil are especially prone to these issues, and without proper stabilization, the effects of expansive clay soil can be costly and damaging.
